This means that there are a total of 12 single starred restaurants in the West Midlands region in the 2022 list (+1 compared with 2022) with there being 6 in the West Midlands county (no change), 3 in Warwickshire (nc) , 1 in Worcestershire (nc),1 in Gloucestershire (nc) and  1 in Staffordshire (+1). There are now 76 Michelin-listed restaurants in the region compared with 82 in the 2021 listing. Apart from the starred restaurants there are 3 Bibs Gourmands (no change, 1 each in Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire) and 61 plates (19 in Gloucestershire -  9 in Cheltenham) (-3), 3 in Herefordshire (no change), 9 in Shropshire - 4 in Ludlow (no change), 3 in Staffordshire (-2), 9 in Warwickshire (-1), 11 in West Midlands - 10 in Birmingham (-1) and 7 in Worcestershire - 3 in Broadway (no change).

In fact there is very little that has changed as regards Michelin listings in the West Midlands region in the 2022 edition. Some restaurants have closed inevitably following the several lockdowns of the pandemic but in previous Blogs I have also pointed out the lack of interest in the region from the Michelin inspectors (tweeting from the region relatively rarely, no additions at all to the listing in any of the monthly updates and so on - when the 2022 list was first published it appeared that the inspectors had not even noticed that  No 9 Church Street in Stratford had closed for good as the restaurant was included in the list). This poor attention to developments in the West Midlands may well be another reason why, despite the use now of internet technology to publish the list, it appears to be steeped in inertia when it comes to the listing of restaurants in the West Midlands region.

This lack of interest in the West Midlands should remind diners in the region that Michelin’s publication is a guide and not a Bible and it is not quite the Heaven-sent gift to those who like to eat here in the west of old Mercia as it would like to portray itself as being. Like many dishes, it sometimes needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. And though I enjoy looking through it, I will only ever be able to take it as seriously as those who publish it believe it should be, when the editor finally discovers that Broadway is not in Gloucestershire but in Worcestershire. For God’s sake, editor, look at the maps you publish.

The Wilderness - Incomprehensibly no star
